Ask about the engineers, not the company
Anyone can show a slick pitch deck. Ask: "who specifically will work on my project, and can I meet them before signing?"
Ask about their last three failures
A team that can't describe failures honestly is a team that's going to hide problems from you.
Ask for a 2-week paid pilot
Good partners will happily take a scoped paid pilot. Bad partners insist on 6-month commitments upfront.
Ask what they'll refuse to do
A mature partner has opinions — about scope, about timelines, about what's worth building. A team that says yes to everything is a team that will miss everything.
